I think pushing for a 4 day work week would help even more. I've worked schedules that were 5, 4, and 3 days per week over the years (still always full time, just longer days if the work week was short).

My level of home tinkering was directly proportional to how much time I had outside of work. When I went to 5 day weeks, all tinkering ended. The only time I tinker now is when I have a few extra days off, that's when I get the itch. A shorter work week means getting that itch every week instead of just a few times per year when I take time off without anything else already planned to fill the time.
